In a recent interview with Fox 10, Good Works Auto Repair owner Glen Hayward warned that the theft of catalytic converters is on the rise in Arizona. In this struggling economy, even criminals are feeling a new level of desperation and are stealing automotive components that contain precious metals, like the platinum, palladium, and rhodium in this particular part. Victims are most often the owners of SUVs and trucks because of the easy access to the catalytic converter, but any vehicle parked in a secluded area is a likely target. The part is easily removed in 5 or 10 minutes and thieves are making $100-$300 for their labors. Unfortunately, the victim is hit with a replacement cost of up to $1,000! This has become such a widespread problem that the Tempe Police Department has set up a special task force, but they warn the public to beware and take extra precautions. Their advice? Be conscious of where you park at night, keep your car in a locked garage when possible, and communicate with your neighbors – we all have to watch out for each other!
