Good news! According to the American Automobile Association, the economy has improved enough that 11% more Americans will be traveling this Thanksgiving than last year. That means that over 40 million people will be going more than 50 miles from home for their turkey and pumpkin pie. 94% of those will be by car.
Chances are, many of our readers will be included in that number. And, you’ve probably already talked to Mom to plan which part of the dinner you’ll be bringing, dug out your cold-weather clothes, and gathered a few snacks for the trip. BUT, have you made sure your car is ready for the trip??
Here’s a few recommendations we’d like to make to ensure that your holiday trip is fun and stress free.
1. Check your tires. Make sure the pressure is good and that you have plenty of tread. Don’t forget to take a look at your spare tire, too!
2. Try out your windshield wipers. The blades should completely clear the glass with each pass. If they leave streaks, hop, or miss spots, they should be replaced. While you are thinking about your windshield, fill the windshield washer reservoir with cleaning solution.
3. Wiggle your battery cables to make sure the connections are tight and the terminals are free from corrosion. If your battery is more than three years old, you should have it tested to make sure it has sufficient life left.
4. If it’s been a while since your car has been to a professional, take it in for a safety inspection. Most auto repair facilities offer pre-trip inspections to make sure your fluid levels, belts, hoses, and suspension are all ready for travel.
5. Pack an emergency road kit. Your road kit may vary based on your route and destination, so plan ahead. Some items you might include are:
- Ice scraper
- Small shovel
- Gloves, hats, blankets
- Flashlight with new batteries
- Rags or paper towels
- Jumper cables
- Warning flares
- Drinking water
- Non-perishable energy or granola bars
- First aid kit
- Basic hand tools including adjustable wrench, pliers, Phillips and Flathead screwdrivers
- Cellular phone and car charger
We wish you the happiest Thanksgiving holiday with your friends and family. We all have much to be thankful for. Stay safe!
