You May Need a New Car Battery If …

1. Your vehicle’s engine cranks slower than normal when you try to start your car.

2. You repeatedly need to jump start your vehicle to get it going.

3. Your vehicle’s battery emits a sulfur or rotten egg smell.

4. The ‘check engine’ light comes on.

5. Battery fluid is low.

6. The battery case looks swollen or bloated.

7. The battery you have is more than three years old.

It’s important to note that these are all warning signs that you may need a new car battery … not necessarily a guarantee that battery replacement is necessary.

For example, an illuminated ‘check engine’ light could indicate other problems, some of which may be even more serious than a failing battery. And, something like low battery fluid could be due to a leak or simply the result of evaporation after being exposed to extreme heat. In any case, these signs are indicators that at the very least, you should schedule battery service at your local auto repair shop sooner than later. If the battery can’t be serviced or repaired, replacement may be necessary.

How to Extend the Life of Your New Car Battery

Most car batteries are not intended to last more than three years. If they do, you can be sure they’re on borrowed time and you should watch closely for warning signs of battery failure. You can help prevent the need for a new car battery sooner than three years by following these tips:

1. Only use the battery recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

2. Keep frequent short-distance trips to a minimum.

3. When your vehicle is off, keep electrical accessories from draining your car battery by turning them off as well.

4. Use your vehicle frequently and don’t let it sit unused for long periods of time.

5. Keep exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures to a minimum.

6. Schedule regular battery service (at least every two years) for battery cleaning, inspection, and maintenance.
